Character
Drive, protectiveness and the thinking dog
The Giant is a problem-solver. Left without a task, it will invent one.
What the AKC reports
- High energy, thriving in active households.
- Intelligent, alert, loyal and highly trainable.
- Protective and sometimes territorial, so early socialization and training are important.
- May be suspicious of unfamiliar people or places, yet affectionate with its own people.
- Not recommended by the AKC for first-time owners, families with small children or homes with cats.
Why those traits exist
The breed history explains them. Cattle drovers needed stamina and judgment, while property guards needed to notice strangers. A dog that learned police work in Europe had to be trainable under pressure. Even today, the AKC notes that in Europe a Giant must earn a Schutzhund I certificate before entering conformation classes, which says something about what that culture expects from the breed.
Drive in daily terms
| Trait | What it looks like at home | What helps |
|---|---|---|
| Stamina | Pacing, chewing, restless evenings | Long runs or hikes plus mental work |
| Alertness | Barking at passers-by | Teaching a quiet cue and controlling the view from windows |
| Wariness of strangers | Stiffness or distance with visitors | Wide, calm socialization from an early age |
| Intelligence | Testing rules | Consistent routines and varied training |
Suitable jobs
The AKC lists carting, herding, agility, Coursing Ability Tests and obedience as activities that suit the breed. A dog with such outlets is easier to live with than a dog expected to do nothing.
Think about whether that describes your household in handler fit.
