Giant Schnauzer protection dog
The Giant Schnauzer: uncommon, capable and not for the casual owner
Bred to drive cattle and guard farms and breweries, then pressed into police work, the Giant is a thinking, protective dog. This guide looks at rarity, coat, drive and the handler it needs.

A working dog from the start
According to the American Kennel Club, Giant Schnauzers began in the German states of Bavaria and Württemberg, where they drove cattle to market and guarded farms. Later they stood watch over butcher shops, taverns and breweries. Police training in Germany began just before the First World War, and police work has been a main occupation for the breed ever since.
That history leaves a dog that is protective by design, intelligent and happiest with a task. The AKC describes it as highly trainable but also warns that the protective streak can turn territorial without early socialization.
